Last newsletter I asked you whether the observable universe accounts for only about five percent of what exists — and whether the remaining ninety-five percent, composed of dark matter and dark energy, has never been directly observed.

Here is your answer.

Fact. Entirely.

The figures vary slightly depending on the measurement method, but the consensus among cosmologists is that ordinary matter — the stuff that makes up stars, planets, gas clouds, and everything we have ever detected — accounts for approximately five percent of the total energy content of the universe. Dark matter accounts for roughly twenty-seven percent. Dark energy accounts for the remaining sixty-eight percent. Neither has ever been directly observed. Dark matter is inferred from the gravitational behaviour of galaxies. Dark energy is inferred from the accelerating expansion of the universe. What they actually are remains one of the deepest unsolved problems in physics.

Now. Before I tell you about Novella #3- The Postmaster of Treblinka – here is today’s statement:

The Treblinka extermination camp, located in occupied Poland, was operational between July 1942 and October 1943. In that period, between seven hundred thousand and nine hundred thousand people were murdered there — almost all of them Jewish. On 2 August 1943, prisoners staged an uprising. Several hundred escaped. Most were recaptured and killed. A small number survived. After the uprising, the camp was dismantled by the SS, the ground ploughed over, and a farmhouse built on the site to conceal what had happened there. For years after the war, the full scale of the killing at Treblinka was not widely known.

But first, let me tell you about The Postmaster of Treblinka.

David Herzl is a forger. Not a criminal — or not only a criminal. He is a craftsman of extraordinary ability, a man who can look at a painting and reproduce it so perfectly that experts cannot tell the copy from the original. In the Warsaw Ghetto, that skill made him valuable. In Treblinka, it kept him alive.

The Postmaster of Treblinka is the story of what Herzl did with that skill at the worst moment in human history — and what the consequences of that act turned out to be, eighty years later, when his diary fell into the wrong hands.

I want to tell you something about writing this novella. The history of Treblinka is not easy to research. It is not easy to sit with. The scale of what happened there — the speed of it, the deliberateness of it, the almost complete destruction of the evidence — is the kind of historical fact that resists comprehension. I did not want to write about it sensationally. I did not want to use it as backdrop. I wanted to find, within that history, a single human story — one man, one act, one small piece of defiance in the middle of an industrial process designed to leave nothing behind.

Herzl’s act of defiance is small. It is also, as it turns out, enormous. The consequences of what he did in Treblinka in 1943 reach forward across eight decades and land, with full force, in the present day — in a darknet gambling empire, a chain of murders across Europe, and a missing masterpiece that Jack Rogan has been asked to find.

This novella is the bridge between Book #5 and Book #8. Read it before you read The Stolen Altarpiece. You will understand why.

Last newsletter I asked you whether Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine remained the standard medical textbook in European universities until the seventeenth century — and whether it represents the most influential single work in the history of medical science.

Here is your answer.

Fact. Both parts of it.

Ibn Sina completed the Canon of Medicine around 1025 AD. It was translated into Latin in the twelfth century and adopted by European medical schools almost immediately. It remained a core medical text at universities including Montpellier, Bologna, and Oxford for over five hundred years. Its influence on European medicine — on anatomy, pharmacology, and clinical diagnosis — was so pervasive that some historians argue it shaped the foundations of Western medicine more than any other single document. Whether it is the most influential work in the history of medical science is a question scholars still debate. That it belongs in the conversation is not.

Now. Before I tell you about Book #5, here is today’s statement:

Astrophysics has produced some of the most disorienting discoveries in the history of human knowledge. One of them is this: the observable universe — everything we can see, measure, and detect — accounts for only about five percent of what exists. A headless body on a boat is not the kind of thing Jack Rogan expects to find when he agrees to help a friend. I have always been fascinated by the intersection of current science and human ambition — the point where a discovery stops being purely academic and starts attracting the kind of attention that gets people killed. Astrophysics gave me a world I had not explored before in this series, and the research took me into territory that was genuinely astonishing. The science in this novel is real. The conspiracy wrapped around it is fiction. The line between the two is, as always, deliberately blurred.

Jack is also carrying something personal in this novel — a thread from his own past that has been running quietly through the series and surfaces here with new urgency. He is not simply solving a case. He is looking for something that belongs to him.

The curious case of the missing head turns out to be about much more than a body on a boat. It always is, with Jack Rogan.

The pope who needed a miracle

Greetings from my attic in the Blue Mountains, my friends!

In the last newsletter, I asked you whether Jewish forgers inside the Warsaw Ghetto substituted their own copies for original artworks, delivering perfect fakes to the SS while hiding the genuine paintings — and whether some of them signed their forgeries with hidden marks invisible to anyone who did not know where to look.

Here is your answer.

Fact. The historical record documents exactly this. Men working under conditions of unimaginable danger, with smuggled materials and borrowed time, produced forgeries of such quality that they passed SS inspection without question. Some of them did leave hidden marks — private signatures, invisible proofs of what they had done and who had done it. They knew they would probably not survive. They left the marks anyway.

I find that detail almost unbearable in the best possible way. The instinct to be known. To leave a trace. To say: I was here, and I did this, and it mattered. That instinct does not go away even when everything else has been taken.

It is one of the reasons I keep writing historical fiction. The history keeps showing me things about human nature that I could not have invented.

Now. Before I tell you about Book #4, here is today’s statement. This one travels back to the eleventh century — to a Persian physician and philosopher whose work cast a shadow so long that it reached across continents and centuries and changed the way the Western world understood the human body.

Ibn Sina — known in the West as Avicenna — wrote his masterwork Al-Qanun Fi Al-Tibb, The Canon of Medicine, in the early eleventh century. It was translated into Latin in around 1150 CE and became the primary medical reference text in European universities. It remained the standard teaching text in medical schools across Europe until well into the seventeenth century — more than five hundred years after it was written. Some historians of medicine argue that no single work in the history of the discipline has been more widely read, more extensively taught, or more consequential in shaping how physicians understood disease, diagnosis, and treatment. That a book written in Persia a thousand years ago could still be governing the education of European doctors in the age of Shakespeare is, depending on how you look at it, either a proof to its brilliance or a sobering comment on the pace of medical progress.

But first, let me tell you about Professor K: The Final Quest.

It begins where Book #3 ended — but it begins with a new urgency. A new crisis. A situation so delicate, so politically explosive, and so medically unprecedented that the people responsible for managing it have run out of conventional options. They need something that does not yet exist. And they need it quickly.

That is all I will say about the circumstances. Because the pleasure of this book is in watching the pieces come together — in understanding, gradually, just how many different worlds are about to collide.

What I can tell you is that Professor K: The Final Quest is the book where everything that was set in motion in Book #3 arrives at its destination. The science. The history. The secrets that have been protected across decades and continents by people with the power and the will to protect them. All of it converges here.

I want to say something about the Vatican, because it is central to this book and because I think it is one of the most misunderstood institutions in the world — not in a theological sense, but in a purely human one. The Vatican is an ancient organisation that has survived for two thousand years by being, simultaneously, an institution of profound spiritual authority and a very sophisticated political operation. Those two things are not in contradiction. They have always coexisted. And the tension between them — between what the Church believes and what the Church must do to survive — is one of the most dramatically rich territories I have ever written in.

Professor K: The Final Quest takes that tension seriously. It does not caricature the Church or its officials. It asks what happens when an institution built on faith is confronted with a scientific discovery that faith alone cannot explain — and that science, in its current state, cannot fully account for either.

That is the space where this book lives. Between what we believe and what we can prove. Between what medicine can do and what it cannot. Between the past that Professor K uncovered and the future that his discovery makes possible.

Jack Rogan does not belong in that space by training or by temperament. He is a journalist. He deals in facts. But the facts in this book keep opening onto questions that facts alone cannot close.

That is what makes it, for me, one of the most satisfying books I have written.

The forger who hid a secret in a lily pond

Greetings from my attic in the Blue Mountains, my friends!

In the last newsletter, I asked you whether scientists have discovered that so-called junk DNA is not junk at all — that it contains regulatory sequences and genetic switches whose functions we are only beginning to understand, and that some researchers believe hidden within it are keys to diseases we cannot yet cure.

Here is your answer.

Fact. The science is real, it is current, and it is moving faster than most people realise. The term “junk DNA” was coined in the 1970s and became one of the most consequential misnomers in the history of biology. The ENCODE project and subsequent research have demonstrated that vast portions of the genome previously dismissed as non-functional are in fact deeply active. What they do, and what they might tell us about human disease and human potential, is one of the most contested and consequential questions in science today.

I did not invent Professor K’s obsession. I borrowed it from reality and followed it to a place reality has not yet reached — but may.

That is the contract I make with every book in this series. The science is real. The history is real. The fiction is what happens when you ask: what if someone got there first?

Now. Before I tell you about Novella #2, here is today’s statement. This one comes from the Warsaw Ghetto — from a chapter of history that I found almost impossible to write, and impossible not to write.

During the German occupation of Warsaw, Jewish artists and craftsmen inside the Ghetto continued to work — painting, forging documents, copying masterpieces — sometimes under direct SS orders, sometimes in secret, sometimes both at once. There are documented cases of Jewish forgers who substituted their own copies for original artworks, returning the genuine paintings to their owners while delivering perfect fakes to the SS. These men worked under conditions of unimaginable danger, with materials they had to smuggle in piece by piece, knowing that discovery meant death. Some of them signed their forgeries with hidden marks — a private record of what they had done, invisible to anyone who did not know where to look.

Fact or fiction?

But first, let me tell you about The Forgotten Painting.

It begins with a masterpiece coming to auction. A painting that should not exist. A painting that carries a history so tangled, so dark, and so improbable that the moment it appears in public, it sets in motion a chain of events that nobody in that auction room is prepared for.

That is all I will say about the story itself. Because The Forgotten Painting is a novella that rewards patience and punishes spoilers. What I can tell you is what it is really about — underneath the plot, underneath the art world and the auction houses and the archival detective work.

It is about what we owe the dead.

Not in a sentimental way. In a very specific, very practical way. When something precious is taken from someone — taken by force, taken by terror, taken by the machinery of organised murder — and then recovered decades later, who does it belong to? The answer seems obvious until you look closely. And when you look closely, it stops being obvious at all.

I sat with that question for a long time before I wrote this novella. I read the legal cases. I read the testimony of survivors and their families. I read the arguments made by museums and governments and private collectors, each of them with their own version of rightful ownership. And I came to understand that the question of who owns a stolen thing is never really about the thing. It is about what the theft meant. About what was destroyed when it was taken. About whether returning the object can ever return what was lost along with it.

The Forgotten Painting does not answer that question cleanly. I do not think it should. But it asks it honestly, and it asks it through characters who have earned the right to be heard.

There is a man at the centre of this story who did something brave and true and completely secret. He left no record of what he had done — except one. Hidden where almost no one would think to look. I find that kind of courage — quiet, unwitnessed, uncelebrated — more moving than almost anything else I have written.

The Forgotten Painting is shorter than the novels. But it is not lighter. Some of the heaviest things I have ever put on the page are in these pages.

In the last newsletter, I asked you whether a Bunuba resistance fighter named Jandamarra was killed in the Kimberley in 1897, and whether his skull was held in England for 113 years before being repatriated to Australia.

Here is your answer:

Fact. Every detail of it. Jandamarra was a real man — a tracker, a fighter, a figure of extraordinary courage and complexity — and his story is one of the most remarkable in Australian history. He was killed at Tunnel Creek on 1 April 1897. His skull was removed and sent to England, where it remained for over a century. It was repatriated to the Bunuba people in 2010. The colonial authorities who could not defeat him in the field settled, in the end, for taking his head.

I did not invent Jandamarra. I could not have. No imagination is equal to what actually happened to him.

In The Disappearance of Anna Popov, Jandamarra appears as a presence — a man still working out his unfinished business from the other side of death. I described him that way because his story did not end at Tunnel Creek. It is still being told.

This is one of the reasons I keep writing historical fiction. The history keeps showing me things about human nature that I could not have invented.

Now. Before I tell you about Book #3, here is today’s statement. This one moves from the darkest chapter of the twentieth century into the laboratory — into the frontier of science where the next great battle over human life is already being fought.

For decades, scientists dismissed approximately 98 percent of human DNA as having no function. They called it “junk DNA.” In recent years, that assumption has been overturned. Some scientists now believe that hidden within this vast, largely uncharted territory are the keys to diseases we cannot yet cure, and to human capabilities we cannot yet explain.

In the last newsletter, I asked you whether the Vatican operated a network that helped Nazi war criminals escape to South America and Australia after the war.

Here is your answer:

Fact. Every word of it.

The ratlines are one of the most thoroughly documented and least discussed chapters of the twentieth century. Senior Church officials were involved. False identities were provided. Men who had overseen mass murder lived out comfortable lives in Sydney, Buenos Aires, and dozens of other cities, their pasts buried under new names and new respectability. The historical record is unambiguous. The Swiss banks, the forged documents, the complicit institutions — all of it confirmed by decades of investigative journalism, declassified intelligence files, and the painstaking work of Holocaust researchers.

I did not invent any of it for The Empress Holds the Key. I simply followed the trail where it led.

That is the thing about this series. The history keeps turning out to be worse than the fiction.

Now. Before I tell you about Book #2, here is today’s statement. This one comes from the Australian outback — from a chapter of history that most Australians have never been taught.

In the 1890s, a young Bunuba man named Jandamarra led a guerrilla resistance campaign against colonial settlement in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It begins with an object found in a hidden compartment. A small thing. The kind of thing that should mean nothing. But it carries a name, and that name belongs to a young woman who vanished years earlier — and who, it turns out, may not be as lost as everyone assumed.

That is all I will tell you about the plot. Because this is a book that works best when you come to it knowing as little as possible. What I can tell you is where it takes Jack — and what it asks of him.

The Disappearance of Anna Popov moves across more ground, geographically and morally, than anything I had written up to that point. It goes to places I had not expected to go when I started. It introduces characters who surprised me as I wrote them — characters who refused to be simple, who insisted on being complicated and contradictory and, in some cases, genuinely frightening.

There is a villain in this book who quotes opera. I want you to think about what that means. Not as an affectation. Not as a quirk. But as a window into a mind that has constructed an entire moral universe to justify what it does. I find that kind of character far more unsettling than simple evil. Simple evil is easy to dismiss. Coherent evil makes you think.

There is also a woman in this book who can find the missing. She knows things she should not be able to know. And she knows something about herself that she carries quietly, without drama, without self-pity — and that knowledge shapes every decision she makes.

I spent a long time with both of those characters before I understood them well enough to write them.

The Disappearance of Anna Popov is also the book where Jack faces the hardest question I have ever put to him. He is a journalist. He finds the truth. He has the story. He has everything a journalist lives for.

And then he has to decide what to do with it.

I will not tell you what he decides. But I will tell you that when I wrote that final scene, I understood something about Jack that I had not fully understood before. He is not, at his core, a journalist. He is something older and harder to name. A witness. A keeper of things that matter. A man who understands that some truths belong to the people they nearly destroyed — not to the world that was never in danger.

That is the Jack Rogan I have been writing all along.
