Attic Whispers from the Blue Mountains

Greetings from my Attic!
In this edition, my friends, I have something special to share with you. Intrigued? It’s all about an exciting journey through breathtakingly beautiful French Polynesia and a spectacular book launch in Tahiti. The reason I decided to launch The Bone Scraper Legacy in Tahiti is anchored in history: the great Polynesian migration which began around three thousand years ago in Taiwan and finished in New Zealand.
As The Bone Scraper Legacy deals specifically with certain aspects of Māori history and culture, it seemed apparent and appropriate to explore the origin of the Māori who arrived in New Zealand between 1320 and 1350 AD by canoe (waka) from East Polynesia.
Recent DNA evidence strongly suggests that Polynesian ancestry reaches back to the indigenous peoples of Taiwan. From Taiwan, these early Austronesians moved south to the Philippines and from there to the Solomon Islands, Samoa and Tonga. Further eastward migration then took them to the Society Islands of Tahiti and then as far east as the Marquesas Islands, which became the starting point of further migration south to New Zealand.
After a long flight from Sydney via New Zealand, my journey began in Papeete, Tahiti. From there, I sailed to Rangiora, Tuamotu, and then further east to the spectacular Marquesas Islands, where I visited Hiva Oa, Fatu Hiva, Ua Pou and Nuku Hiva before returning to Fakarava, Tuamotu and finally Bora Bora and Moorea in the Society Islands.
Along the way, I spoke to many locals about their history and customs and visited numerous archaeological sites, including an ancient ceremonial site on Fatu Hiva with extraordinary rock art.
Stunning performances by indigenous dancers brought an authentic and exotic atmosphere to my visit to these secluded islands in the heart of the Pacific, located between Australia and South America.
The beating of drums stirred primeval rhythms deep within, easily transporting one to another world.
